In 1997 a star director teamed up with Shahrukh Khan for a big-budget action thriller that ended up being the years biggest flop. The directors son has since disclosed that he saw his father in tears following the films failure. It is said that the filmmaker broke down in tears when he saw his film making terrible business at box office. Can you guess which film are we talking about? In 1997 Rakesh Roshan with a five-decade career in Hindi cinema known for hits like Khoon Bhari Maang Khudgarz and Karan Arjun faced a major setback with his latest thriller-action film. A mistake in the project led to a significant financial loss leaving him heartbroken. The film Koyla starred the legendary Shahrukh Khan and the talented Madhuri Dixit. Shahrukh played a mute character while Amrish Puri portrayed a terrifying villain. Despite its strong cast and storyline the film struggled with some issues that caused audiences to reject it. In an interview with ETC Bollywood Hrithik Roshan reflected on the tough time surrounding Koyla. He remembered how deeply his father was affected by the films failure which worried Hrithik and scared him to see his father cry. Meanwhile Rakesh Roshan was preparing to launch Hrithik in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai in 2000 just as they were facing the disappointment of Koyla. Hrithik Roshan shared that he has seen his father Rakesh Roshan get emotional on two occasions: during the troubles of Koyla and during his brain surgery in 2013. He explained that the films failure caused significant problems for their family as Rakesh had invested everything in it and lost a lot of money. To make matters worse some people took advantage of the situation and ran away with funds leaving the director in a tough spot. It’s rumoured that the role in Koyla was initially offered to Sunny Deol before it went to Shahrukh Khan. However Sunny was reluctant to take on a mute character and had some reservations about the storyline leading him to ultimately decline the offer. In Koyla Shahrukh Khan portrayed the character of Shankar a mute servant in a story that was a remake of the 1990 Hollywood film Revenge. The film had a hefty budget of around 12 crore rupees. While the star power of Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit helped the film recover its costs it ultimately fell short of the profits Rakesh Roshan had anticipated leading audiences to label it a flop.
