New Delhi: In what comes a major blow for the Indian team ahead of the all-important Border-Gavaskar trophy, skipper Rohit Sharma could miss one of the first two matches of the five-game series in Australia. Team India is set to embark on a tough five-Test series starting November 22 in Perth and there is a strong possibility that Rohit might not feature in that game or the second match in Adelaide  from December 6-10.

A BCCI source revealed to news agency PTI, that the skipper has to attend to some personal commitments during that time and hence could be unavailable. The same has been communicated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by Rohit.

“There isn’t any complete clarity about the situation. It is understood that Rohit has intimated to the BCCI that there is a possibility that due to a pressing personal matter, he might have to skip one of the two Tests at the beginning of the series,” a BCCI source told PTI.

“In case, the personal issue is sorted before the start of the series, he might play all five Tests. We will get to know more in coming days,” he added.

Who will be Rohit’s cover?

If 37-year-old Rohit misses the first or the second Test against Australia or both, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are the players with enough experience who can fill in the opening slot in his absence. According to multiple media reports, the in-form Abhimanyu Easwaran could also become his cover for the missed games. Rohit played both the home Tests against Bangladesh recently.
