From soothing your eyes with cold compresses to maintaining a clean, allergy-free environment, these easy-to-follow tips will help ease your eye allergy troubles naturally and effectively. To understand more about eye allergies and how to care for eyes at home, OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr Sri Ganesh, Eye Surgeon, Chairman and Managing Director, Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bengaluru. Allergy-induced conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as eye allergies, can be uncomfortable, irritating, and interfere with one's day-to-day activities. According to Dr Sri Ganesh, "These reactions are brought on by common allergens such as mold spores, dust mites, pollen, or pet dander (hair or fur), and can cause red, itchy, watery, and swollen eyes." Although eye drops or antihistamines are useful, small things done easily at home can aid in the prevention and management of eye allergies. If symptoms don't subside please contact your eye doctor for professional advice. These easy-to-follow but efficient home care tips will help keep allergies at bay, and protect your eyes. Here are some tips recommended by Dr Sri Ganesh. Keep Surroundings Clean One of the best ways to manage eye allergies is to reduce exposure to allergens. Dr Sri Ganesh recommended to regularly vacuum your home, wash bedding in hot water, and use dust-mite-proof covers for pillows and mattresses. Regularly clean air filters in your air conditioning to prevent the circulation of allergens.   Apply Cold Compresses A cold compress can reduce swelling and soothe the itchiness in your eyes. "Simply soak a clean cloth in cold water, wring it out, and place it over closed eyelids for 10-15 minutes. Repeat this throughout the day to reduce discomfort," Dr Sri Ganesh said. Use Over-The-Counter Eye Drops "By eliminating irritants and maintaining moisture in your eyes, lubricating eye drops and artificial tears can offer immediate comfort. Additionally, antihistamine eye drops made especially for allergy relief are available," Dr Sri Ganesh said. To help lessen itching, redness, and swelling, use them as instructed. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes It can be tempting to rub your eyes when they itch, but this can make the irritation worse. "Rubbing can spread allergens further into your eyes and even damage the delicate tissues around them," Dr Sri Ganesh warned.  Use Air Purifier An air purifier can significantly reduce the number of airborne allergens in your home. This is especially useful if you are allergic to pollen or pet dander. Place an air purifier in the rooms you spend the most time in, such as the bedroom or living room. Dealing with eye allergies can be frustrating, but with the right home care practices, you can significantly improve your comfort and eye health. By making small changes, like the ones mentioned above, you empower yourself to manage symptoms more effectively. While these tips can ease your discomfort, staying proactive is key. It is important to listen to your body and give your eyes the care they deserve. After all, clear, healthy eyes are the key to a clearer, brighter vision.
