Harjinder Kaur breaks three national records

Commonwealth Games medalist Harjinder Kaur created new national records in all three women’s 71 Kg categories at the National Weightlifting Championships in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh on Thursday.

Harjinder started the competition with a national record in the snatch category with her final attempt at 98 Kg, bettering her national record by 2 Kg from last year’s National Championships.

The 28-year-old followed this up in the clean-and-jerk category with a lift of 125 Kg on her second attempt to break her last year’s national record by 1 Kg. However, she missed out on her final attempt of 130 Kg.

With a combined total of 223 Kg, Harjinder also bettered her national record for the overall category by 3 Kg and successfully defended her National Championships title.

Harjinder is also a Commonwealth Games bronze medalist from 2022 Birmingham and will be setting her eyes on bettering this performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

In the men’s 81 Kg, Abhishek defended his title with a total of 318 Kg (Snatch -140 Kg, Clean and Jerk – 178 Kg) betting his last’s year performance by a good 8 kg.

On the other hand, Commonwealth Games champion Achinta Sehuli and the rising star Valluri Ajaya Babu won the silver and bronze medals respectively.
