To help keep prices down, Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue (NBR) cut the duty on eggs imported from 25% to 5% on Thursday.

As a result of the order, the cost of importing eggs would go down by 13.8 takas per dozen. This would make the country’s cheapest source of protein more accessible to regular people, the NBR said in a statement.

The lower tax on eggs coming into the country will last until December 31, according to Xinhua.

Egg prices in Bangladesh have gone up to 200 taka a dozen in the last week, so people have cut back on eating them. This happened in the city Dhaka and other parts of the country as well.

The Ministry of Commerce in Bangladesh says that the country needs 40 million eggs every day. One dollar is equal to 120 taka.

Bangladesh cut the fee on imported refined sugar earlier this month to make the market more stable.
