Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Varanasi on October 20 and he is expected to lay the foundation stone of India’s widest rail-cum-road bridge. The ‘Signature-double-decker bridge’ will run over Ganga in the Varanasi and Chandauli districts. It is learnt that it will be the widest railway bridge in the nation with a six-lane road on it.  The prime minister apart from this will be laying stones for 23 projects worth Rs 1300 crore.  A few days back the Centre had approved  the rail-cum-road bridge project across Ganga. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2642 crore and it will be completed within 4 years.  While talking to media persons Union Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw talked about the proposed bridge. He highlighted how the Malviya bridge is important over the Ganga river as it links northern eastern and western states and said that its replacement is essential.  He said the Malviya Bridge is a rail-cum-road bridge (two-line rail and two-lane road) which was constructed 137 years ago and the route between Varanasi and DDU Junction is oversaturated (163 per cent). The new rail-road bridge with four railway lines and a six-lane highway bridge will be constructed on the Ganga River with an investment of Rs 2642 crore.
