The Uttar Pradesh administration informed the Supreme Court on Tuesday that it has postponed the use of bulldozers until tomorrow. Until Wednesday, October 23, the authorities will not take any action against people who are alleged to have rioted in Bahraich.
Three defendants in connection with the communal violence event that occurred in Bahraich earlier this month were presenting their pleas before the Supreme Court. The accused challenged the Uttar Pradesh government’s demolition notifications in the highest court. A bench consisting of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan heard a statement from Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday.
Senior counsel C U Singh previously filed an application on behalf of the petitioners, stating, “This is an application by three persons who are recipients of demolition notices.” Only three days have been granted by the state administration to reply to the notifications.
On October 13, people from two different religious communities fought outside a place of worship in Bahraich over loud music performed by a Durga idol procession. The gunshot wounds of Ram Gopal Mishra, 22, resulted in his death.
The unrest, which started in the Bahraich neighborhood of Maharajganj, resulted in vandalism and arson as stores, cars, and a private hospital were set on fire. In response, the government suspended internet access for four days and boosted the number of security guards on duty.
