A new war has broken out in India over satellite internet. Elon Musk and Airtel are in one group and Reliance Jio has separated. The reason for this is that the spectrum auction for satellite internet is not going to take place in India. Recently, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said during a New Delhi event that according to Indian laws, the spectrum will be allocated administratively and its price will be decided by the telecom regulator. Let's try to understand what satellite internet is and how it works.

What is satellite internet?
Satellite internet is a type of internet service in which satellite is used for internet connectivity. It helps in providing internet services in areas where traditional broadband or mobile network services are not available, such as remote villages, hilly areas, or sea areas.

How satellite internet works
Satellite internet requires a satellite dish and modem. When users make an internet request, such as opening a website, this request is first sent from the satellite dish to a satellite. The satellite sends the user's request to the Network Operation Center (NOC) located on the earth. This center is connected to the Internet. From there, the required data is collected and sent back to the user's device through the satellite. The data sent by the satellite is received on the user's dish, then the modem decodes it and transmits it to the user's computer or other device.

Major parts of satellite internet
Ground station: These stations send and receive data to the satellite and are called NOCs.
Satellite: Satellites are placed in the Earth's orbit and are used for telecommunication.
User device: Users have a satellite dish and modem which are required to send and receive signals from the satellite.

Advantages of satellite internet
Connectivity in remote areas: It provides internet services in areas where cable or mobile towers do not reach.
Mobility: You can set it up anywhere where satellite signal is available.

Disadvantages of Satellite Internet
Latency: Signals take time to travel to the satellite and back, which can add to the latency.

Weather effects: Bad weather, such as rain or snow, can affect signal quality.
