Samsung Does Not Plan To Launch A Cheaper Foldable Phone Anytime Soon

Samsung has launched two versions of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 model this year and none of them are affordable. In fact, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition costs more than the regular variant. So, when does Samsung plan to launch a cheaper Fold model to attract more buyers to the segment?

Well, the bad news is that Samsung is not interested in making an affordable foldable, at least for the next few years. Samsung has been quoted in a report this week, where the brand has emphasised its focus on premium products, and don’t foresee a “separate fold with a lower price.”

Samsung started the foldable segment with the Galaxy Z Fold but its hold has come down as more brands have shown to be far more effective with their new-gen products. For instance, you have the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro which is not only lighter than the Z Fold 6 but also has a more versatile camera system than the latter. Similarly, Huawei’s new foldable is as thin as a regular smartphone, while Samsung is barely cutting the corners for its models, and when it does, the price goes up even more.

Barring China, the foldable segment has failed to light up in major countries, and the price tag has a lot to do with the situation, Samsung could have made the right move, but these comments suggest it is happy to dabble in the premium corner, rather than go aggressive to push the needle in the market for its rivals.

After all, it has the Galaxy Z Flip versions selling for under Rs 1 lakh, and brands like OnePlus have shown that standard foldables don’t need to be super costly. For now, we are hoping that the next foldable from Samsung doesn’t sit next to the Z Fold 6 and looks the same.
