Central Govt Employees to Get Extra Pension: Pensioners will get this additional pension from the first date of the same month in which their age falls in any category of 80 years or above.

The central government has given a big gift to pensioners of 80 years or above. The Department of Pension and Pensioners Welfare (DoPPW) has issued a new notification announcing the facility of extra pension for pensioners. This additional pension has been named 'compassionate allowance', which will be specifically for retired government employees of 80 years or above.

When will pensioners get additional pension?

According to the new rule, pensioners who complete 80 years of age will start getting extra pension from the first date of the month in which their age will be 80 years. For example, if a pensioner is born on 20 August 1942, then he will start getting this additional pension from 1 August 2022. Similarly, if a pensioner is born on the first date of the month, then he will start getting extra pension from the same day.

How much extra pension will be available at what age?

The percentage of additional pension will increase based on age. Under this, pensioners will get the following age-based benefits:

  • 80 to 85 years: 20 percent of basic pension or compassionate allowance
  • 85 to 90 years: 30 percent of basic pension or compassionate allowance
  • 90 to 95 years: 40 percent of basic pension or compassionate allowance
  • 95 to 100 years: 50 percent of basic pension or compassionate allowance
  • 100 years or more: 100 percent of basic pension or compassionate allowance

What do the rules say?

This facility has been implemented under Sub Rule 6 of Rule 44 of the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021, which is an updated version of Rule 49(2-A) of the 1972 rules. According to this rule, it is mandatory for pensioners of 80 years or more to get extra pension or compassionate allowance, which will be according to the percentage fixed according to age.

It is clearly stated in this update that pensioners will get this additional pension from the first date of the month in which their age falls in any category of 80 years or above. DoPPW has directed all the concerned departments and banks to follow this new policy and implement it immediately so that pensioners can get the benefit of this facility on time.
