A speeding car mowed down two girls when they were making rangolis outside their homes ahead of the Diwali festival in Indore’s Bhawani Nagar, leaving them seriously injured, said police on Wednesday.
The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, was caught on CCTV, showing a black-coloured hatchback running over the victims, identified as Priyanshi (21) and Nivya (14).
Both the victims were rushed to a hospital for treatment, said the officials, adding that the 17-year-old driver was detained.
The video shows them making rangoli when a speeding car coming from behind crashed into them and ploughed into a shop. During the incident, several parked two-wheelers were also damaged.
Moments later, the residents overturned the car and staged a protest, accusing the police of inaction, reported TOI.
The locals claimed that the teen driver and his friend were fleeing from the scene after the incident. The police, however, detained them and seized the car.
