Mumbai Indians have retained a total of 5 players for IPL 2025. Like other teams of the league, Mumbai also released its retention list on the day of Diwali. Mumbai announced the names of its retained players as well as the name of the captain. Hardik Pandya will be the captain of Mumbai team in the coming season. Indian veteran Sanjay Manjrekar has protested against his appointment as captain. He has raised his voice for making Rohit Sharma the captain. Even in the last season, there was a lot of controversy regarding Pandya's captaincy.
There was a lot of controversy in the last season also regarding the captaincy of Hardik Pandya. There were reports of a lot of tension between Rohit and him. The fans were also not happy with him being made the captain. At the same time, the performance of Mumbai team was also very poor. Despite this, the new management has maintained its faith in Pandya. But again questions are being raised on making him the captain in place of Rohit. Sanjay Manjrekar has started it. He has raised questions on this issue on social media.
Good on MI to retain their core, Rohit, Hardik, Surya, Bumrah & Tilak Verma. But if I had Rohit in my team, I would have got him to lead. Same goes for Dhoni with CSK. That way you get the fullest value from them, thus enhancing your team's chances of winning.#IPLRetention2025

Manjrekar believes that by using Rohit Sharma only as a player, the team will not be able to utilize him fully. Mumbai will not get his full value. If he captains the team then the chances of winning the trophy will increase. He said the same thing for Dhoni in Chennai Super Kings also. However, Manjrekar also praised Mumbai for retaining 5 players from its core group.
Mumbai Indians gave the first position to Jasprit Bumrah for retention and also paid the highest amount of Rs 18 crore for it. Whereas, Suryakumar Yadav got second place and Hardik Pandya got third place. Both have been retained for Rs 16.35-16.35 crore. Apart from this, Rohit Sharma has been retained as the fourth player and he has got Rs 16.30 crore. At the last position, Tilak Verma has again become a part of Mumbai's squad for Rs 8 crore.
