Chhath Puja is a four-day festival dedicated to Lord Surya. During these four days, women observe fast for the well-being of their children and the happiness of the family. Chhath Puja is mainly celebrated in the Indian state of Bihar and neighbouring country Nepal. According to Drik Panchang, the Sun God is worshipped for four days. The first day of Chhath is known as Nahai Khai. On this day, people take a dip in holy water, especially the Ganga River. Women observing the fast, eat only once a day.The second day of Chhath is known as Kharna. On this day, people observe a fast without eating or drinking anything, even water, from sunrise to sunset. Immediately after sunset, the fast is broken after offering food to the Sun God. After consuming the prasad on the second day, the fast of the third day begins.On the third day which is the most important day of Chhath Puja, people observe fast without food and water for the entire day. Offering water to the setting sun is the main ritual of this day. This is the only time of the year when water is offered to the setting sun. The fast on the third day continues throughout the night and is broken after sunrise the next day.On the fourth and final day of Chhath, Arghya is offered to the rising sun and this is known as Usha Arghya. After offering Arghya to the sun, the 36-hour fast is completed.
