Devotees take an early morning bath and change into new garments on the day of Nagula Chavithi. Married ladies often fast for the whole day in prayer for their children’s health and security. They erect a puja space that is embellished with traditional rangoli designs, flowers, and leaves.

Worshiping real snakes or images of the Serpent Gods with gifts of milk, fruits, flowers, and vermilion is the main ritual. In addition to lighting lamps, burning incense, and performing aarti, the ritual ends with naivedya (food offerings) and tamboolam (betel leaves and almonds). In other areas, ladies show their love to the snakes by tying holy threads around them. Families get together for a communal meal when the fast finishes at sundown.
