Former UFC heavyweight sensation Brendan Schaub has made a bold call for and Jake Paul to duke it out in a bare-knuckle brawl next week.
The pair are set to square off . The upcoming bout will feature the two pugilists in a professional face-off, with eight rounds of two minutes each a departure from the usual three-minute rounds.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has given the , where both fighters will don 14-ounce gloves, tipping the scales over the standard weight.
The initial matchup was postponed earlier this year due to Tyson suffering an ulcer outbreak, but the legendary boxer has bounced back into training and is adamant he'll be ring-ready for his dramatic comeback next week. In light of recent developments, event promoters have reportedly slashed ticket prices by half to ensure maximum attendance for the titanic tussle.
Schaub expressed his views on his podcast, remarking: "Yeah no s**t. I like my boy Mike, but there's just no appetite for this. Nobody wants to see it". He went on to say: "It just doesn't make sense. They did too big of an arena. I think they overshot. Yeah know, the other thing is Mike having to pull out because of ulcers.
"I don't get how you're going to twist this one. Mike Tyson, god bless him, pulled out because of ulcers. You know, it's just tough. You want to get people intrigued with this fight, which they can't, they keep trying but they can't... make it bare knuckle.
"If Jake gets hit with a bare knuckle against Mike Tyson, this thing is over because now you're like 'are they in cahoots together, is there a fix going on?".
During the same podcast, the 41 year old explained why he believes it's a poor decision on Paul's part to proceed with the heavyweight bout. "I love Mike Tyson, love Jake, Jake's my boy. I hope it f****** crushes. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out the upside to this. Let's go through the scenarios if you're Jake."
"If you knock him out, people will say, 'What a terrible guy, you just beat up an old man.' If you get knocked out, people will say, 'Told you this guy's a joke, you got beat up by a 58 year old.' The third scenario is it goes to a decision, which would be a disaster, and nobody would be interested afterwards."
However, the American gave a detailed analysis of why he is convinced that Tyson will emerge as the sole victor, no matter the outcome of the fight. "That's a disaster business-wise for Netflix, it a disaster for Jake Paul, who went to a decision with a 58-year-old Mike Tyson. The only person who wins is not Netflix, not Jake Paul. Mike Tyson wins. He can do no wrong. He gets knocked out, he's 58, and still getting paid. He beats Jake Paul, f*** yeah... He goes to decision, Mike Tyson wins".
