In 1980 Desai and his wife Neerja Sethi founded Syntel an IT consulting and outsourcing company in Troy Michigan. They began their company from their apartment in Troy Michigan. In 1976 Desai moved to the United States as a programmer for Tata Groups TCS. Life took a turn when he met Neerja who would soon become his partner in both life and business. The couple living in a small apartment in Michigan shared big dreams and a vision for something of their own. Pooling their savings they took a leap of faith investing around Rs 16000 to start Syntel a venture that would eventually grow beyond their wildest expectations. During its first year Syntel generated a modest USD 30000 in sales. Yet by 2018 the company’s growth had transformed it into a major player leading French IT firm Atos SE to acquire Syntel for an impressive USD 3.4 billion (approximately Rs 28690 crore today).
