A 62-year-old Chinese man who rammed his car into a crowd at a sports complex in Zhuhai, killing 35 people and injuring dozens of others on Monday night, was reportedly "upset over his divorce" and "mentally disturbed," the police has said. The driver, identified as Fan, was detained shortly afterwards, and is being treated for self-inflicted wounds. The attack is being seen as China's deadliest act of random public violence in over a decade.Harrowing footage on social media shows the man plowing his car into the crowd at the Zhuhai Sports Center, a popular venue for jogging, soccer, and dancing. In another disturbing video, a woman is heard saying, "my foot is broken", while a firefighter performs CPR on another victim. Other footage showed people lying on the track, with bystanders being told to leave.Authorities are yet to release the identities of the victims. The government has heavily censored searches for information on the attack.Eyewitnesses said the attack seemed deliberate, as Fan drove his car directly onto the running track, mowing down joggers. "It appeared to be planned," one witness told BBC. In an official statement, the local police stated that initial probe suggests Fan's actions were prompted by a property dispute linked to his divorce.
