Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar took a dig at the Fadnavis couple of Maharashtra. Kanhaiya Kumar said that the responsibility of protecting dharm [religion] should rest upon everyone and not just the general public. Speaking at a public meeting in Maharashtra's Nagpur, he said: "When they speak about protecting dharm [religion], the responsibility should be taken up by everyone. It is not acceptable if we are protecting religion while Deputy Chief Minister's wife is busy making reels."
He was quoted as saying by news agency ANI: "Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that this is a 'Dharmyudh'. This is a good thing. It is our dharm to protect the democracy and the constitution for which I am standing and giving a speech today. Whichever leader talks about saving religion, you have to ask only just one thing 'will your son or daughter join us in this fight to
save religion?'"
Referring to prominent politicians' children going abroad for higher education, Kanhaiya Kumar said: "Will the responsibility of protecting the religion be ours and their children will go to study at Oxford and Cambridge universities. If we want to save religion, let us save it together."
Kanhaiya Kumar's remark riled up the BJP. Shehzad Poonawalla, the Bharatiya Janata Party's spokesperson, lashed out at the Congress leader by calling him a Naxal and a supporter of terrorist Afzal Guru. Poonawalla said that Kanhaiya Kumar's remarks were an insult to a "daughter of Maharashtra". "An insult to Amruta Fadnavis is an insult to every girl in Maharashtra," Poonawalla said.
He also called Kanhaiya a 'chhichhora' or worthless person.
