Achieving back-to-back hits is the dream of every actor but only a few manage to truly conquer the industry. One such actress who was once overlooked and even rejected by many in the film world went on to become a superstar after delivering an incredible eight hits in just one year. This actress who once rivaled Bollywoods top stars like Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor worked with icons such as Akshay Kumar Salman Khan and Govinda creating a lasting mark on the 90s film industry. Were talking about none other than Raveena Tandon.
Raveena made her debut in Bollywood with the blockbuster Patthar Ke Phool but her journey to stardom wasnt easy. In a recent interview she revealed the struggles she faced before she made it big. She recalled how in her early days she had to take on some very humble jobs. I started by cleaning studio floors and even wiping vomit from stalls and studio floors she shared with The Times of India. She also worked as an assistant to ad filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar right after completing her 10th grade. Despite the industrys early dismissal of her Raveena said “Even at that time people would say ‘What are you doing behind the screen? You’re meant to be in front of it.’ I would say ‘Me? An actress? Never!’ I ended up in the industry by default never dreaming I’d become an actress.
However destiny had other plans. In 1994 Raveena stunned the industry by delivering a series of massive hits competing fiercely with established stars like Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor. That year she starred in ten films with eight turning out to be huge box-office successes. Four of those—Mohra Dilwale Aatish and Laadla—became some of the highest-grossing films of the year cementing her place as a Bollywood powerhouse.
Despite turning down major projects like Darr (which went on to become a massive hit) Raveenas career continued to soar. She did star in two films with Shah Rukh Khan but they didn’t perform as expected at the box office. In 2006 after reaching the peak of her career Raveena took a brief break from acting to focus on her personal life. However she made a strong return through the digital space with the highly successful series Aranyak and continues to be a prominent figure in both films and OTT series.
Raveena’s daughter Rasha Thadani is also following in her footsteps and is set to make her Bollywood debut in the upcoming film Azaad starring alongside Ajay Devgns nephew Aman Devgn. The Tandon legacy is far from over with both mother and daughter poised for greater things in the entertainment world.
