presenter welcomed show contestants Kevin, who hailed from Bolton, Sophia originally from Bermuda, David from County Antrim and Lorna from London to compete for a potentially huge cash prize. The quiz show returned on Thursday night (November 14) with the four players putting their knowledge to the test.
The contestants faced , otherwise known as The Sinnerman, in the head-to-head, but while things appeared to be going the team's way - it soon took a turn, sparking fury from viewers.
First up to face the quizmaster was Kevin, 68, who answered six questions correctly in the cash builder. The retired doctor turned comedian opted for the £6,000 offer and safely brought it home.
Up next was Sophia who managed £4,000 in the cash builder but was sadly caught by the chaser.
David, 36, was the third contestant to face The Sinnerman and answered seven questions correctly. The writer admitted he was "tempted" to take the high offer of £60k, and much to viewers' delight, he secured the money, bringing the total to £66k.
Finally, Lorna, 47, took to the floor to answer and refused the low offer, opting for £6,000, bringing the team's total to £72k.
However, viewers were unimpressed by player David despite him securing £60k. They complained that he intervened in the final chase and got several questions wrong.
The trio only managed to answer 16 questions correctly, losing out on the huge cash prize with Paul having 30 seconds left to spare.
One viewer fumed: "Why did David on the Chaser think it was OK to jump in, not giving the other 2 a chance, & just seemed to guess the answers!.... #TheChase."
Another complained: "David lost it for the team." A third said: "72 grand! Do sleep well David! #thechase."
"I'd say most of that's on David by being far more trigger happy on the buzzer than on the mind. And he's the one who brought the £60K home. What a shame," another remarked.
A fifth said: "He's giving all the right answers but to completely different questions #TheChase," while another shared: "Get rid of him."
Others fumed: "David give others a chance ffs #Thechase." Another said: "David too quick with some of his guesses #TheChase."(sic)
However, others suggested he was a show "plant", as one remarked: "David clearly a plant #thechase."
Another commented: "I'm surprised nobody's suggested David is a plant, keeping the score low for a kickback #TheChase."
While David answered the first two questions correctly, things soon went downhill when he got a further seven questions wrong in the final chase.
Unfortunately, Paul caught the contestants in the last round, losing the cash prize of £72k.
The Chase airs weekdays on ITV at 5pm
