In the 1970s she was once a beloved actress in Hindi cinema known for her ability to portray unique and refreshing roles. At the peak of her career she got married. Can you guess which actress we are talking about? Vidya Sinha won audiences over with her innocence and simplicity especially in her role in the film Rajnigandha. She followed up this success with films like Chhoti Si Baat Pati Patni Aur Woh and Safar where her performances left a lasting impact on viewers. Vidyas career was marked by roles that beautifully explored the thoughts and emotions of women. Her acting was filled with an endearing innocence and natural ease that resonated deeply with audiences. Two Marriages and struggles Vidya Sinha was married twice. Her first husband Venkateshwar Iyer passed away and she later married Netaji Bhim Rao Salunke. However her second marriage brought significant struggles. After her second marriage Vidya faced emotional turmoil and difficulties. Vidyas second husband dragged her to court reportedly in a dispute over their flat. This legal battle left Vidya stressed and in poor health often worrying about the future of her daughter Jahnavi in case something happened to her. Sadly Vidya passed away on August 15 2019. Rejecting a superhit film role In an interview Vidya revealed that she was once offered the lead role in Raj Kapoors Satyam Shivam Sundaram but she turned it down. The role required her to wear revealing clothes that she felt uncomfortable with. The character Rupa was not considered beautiful enough by societal standards and the films portrayal of boldness and sexual exploitation was something Vidya could not align with. Vidya explained I turned down Satyam Shivam Sundaram because I wasn’t comfortable wearing clothes like Zeenat Aman’s character. Raj Kapoor and my grandfather were very close and they had worked together in the film Dil Ki Rani (1947). My grandfather’s work with Raj Kapoor’s father Prithviraj Kapoor on Sri Krishna Arjuna Yuddha (1945) made our families familiar with each other but still I told him I didn’t feel comfortable acting in that film. Although Vidya declined the role she did express regret over her decision. She said Working with Raj Kapoor was every actresss dream and I regret saying no to him because I always wanted to work with him. It wasn’t just Vidya who declined the role Hema Malini also turned it down. In Ritu Nanda’s book Raj Kapoor Speaks it’s revealed that Raj Kapoor had also considered casting legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar for the role of Rupa though it’s no surprise that she didn’t act in the film. Vidya’s decision to turn down Satyam Shivam Sundaram remains one of the many complex moments of her career. Despite the films commercial success her choice to prioritize personal comfort and principles over professional opportunity speaks volumes about her integrity and self-respect.
