Imphal: Congress MLA Keisham Meghachandra stated on Sunday that he, along with other party MLAs from Manipur, is prepared to resign amid the state's ongoing surge of violence. The situation in Manipur turned even more volatile as protesters attacked the homes of three state ministers and six Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) on Saturday, including Chief Minister and BJP leader Biren Singh.The violent protests followed the discovery of the bodies of six missing individuals, recovered from a river in Jiribam.Congress MLA Keisham Meghachandra tweeted, "I, along with all the Congress MLAs, am ready to resign as an MLA if the people of Manipur want to bring a new mandate to bring peace in Manipur."At least 250 people have died and 60,000 have been uprooted in Manipur since May last year in inter-communal clashes over government grants and quotas in jobs and education.
Amit Shah Reviews SecurityUnion Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level meeting with senior officials in the national capital to assess the security situation in Manipur. He has planned to hold a detailed review meeting on Monday to address the concerns and strategies surrounding the fragile security scenario that has gripped Manipur in recent days.The situation in Manipur has seen heightened tensions, prompting the government to take proactive steps in monitoring and managing regional stability. Shah convened the meeting after he returned to his residence in Delhi, postponing his planned visit to Vidarbha, where he was expected to attend a series of rallies ahead of Maharashtra assembly polls on November 20.This comes a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs had informed that all the security forces were directed to take necessary steps to restore order and peace in Manipur. It was also informed that strict action would be initiated against anyone trying to indulge in violent and disruptive activities. The ministry also mentioned that important cases were handed over to the National Investigation Agency for effective investigation.Meanwhile, the MHA requested public to maintain peace and not to believe in rumours and cooperate with the security forces to maintain law and order in the state. In light of continued tensions in the region, the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Anish Dayal Singh also reached Manipur earlier on Sunday.This visit comes as the security situation remains volatile, with the CRPF playing a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability. The Director General's visit aims to assess the ground situation firsthand, meet with local security officials, and explore further measures to de-escalate tensions in the area. This high-level visit underscores the government's commitment to addressing ongoing issues and ensuring the safety and well-being of the communities. NPP Withdraws SupportThe National People's Party (NPP) on Sunday withdrew its support from the Biren Singh government amidst escalating violence in Manipur. In a letter to BJP President JP Nadda, NPP Chief Conrad K Sangma said, "We strongly feel that the Manipur State Government, under the leadership of Shri Biren Singh, has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy. Keeping the current situation in mind, the National People's Party has decided to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh-led government in the state of Manipur, with immediate effect," the letter said.The NPP has seven MLA seats in Manipur. The MLAs include Sheikh Noorul Hassan (Kshetrigao AC), Khuraijam Loken Singh (Wangoi AC), Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam AC), Thongam Shanti Singh (Moirang AC), Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh (Kakching AC), N. Kayisii (Tadubi AC), and Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong AC).With the NPP's withdrawal of support, the NDA is down to 46 from 53 in the state assembly. The opposition holds a total of 7 seats, with Congress at 5 and the Kuki People's Alliance (KPA) at 2. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which previously had 37 members, now faces the challenge of managing at least 19 dissident members, making the political situation even more precarious. Chief Minister Biren Singh can have a maximum of 20 MLAs in the Assembly. Curfew Imposed In Imphal, Internet Shut DownIn the Imphal Valley, violent protests have flared up, an indefinite curfew has been imposed, and internet services have been suspended after protestors staged violent protests over the deaths of six persons from a Jiribam camp. The protesters attacked the residences of three state ministers and six MLAs.The six persons were missing from the camp since Monday following a gunfight between militants and security forces that led to the deaths of 10 insurgents. The bodies of the two women and a child were recovered from Barak River in Jiribam on Saturday, while three other bodies, including those of a woman and two children, were found on Friday night. Mob Attempts To Storm CM's ResidenceAgitators ransacked the houses of three legislators, including that of Chief Minister N Biren Singh's son-in-law R K Imo, who is also a BJP MLA, and set their properties on fire on Saturday.Among the ministers whose residences were stormed by the protesters are Sapam Ranjan, L Susindro Singh, Y Khemchand, BJP legislator Sapam Kunjakesore and MLA Joykishan Singh. The MLAs have begun shifting to Delhi and Guwahati amid escalating tensions.Security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse protesters in different parts of Imphal.Curfew was imposed for an indefinite period in Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching districts of Imphal valley "due to developing law and order situation".The state administration suspended internet services temporarily in seven districts. At night, miscreants set fire to at least two churches and three houses in Jiribam town. "There have been reports of further arson and the burning of additional structures by miscreants, but these claims have not yet been independently verified," officials told PTI.
