Liverpool has announced that will undergo a fitness assessment at the AXA Training Centre after pulling out from the Netherlands squad due to 'medical grounds'. The 33-year-old, whose contract expires next summer, led the Dutch team to a 4-0 triumph over Hungary on Saturday.
Despite playing the entire match, manager Ronald Koeman
In a statement shared by the official Netherlands social media accounts, Koeman said: "For both Frenkie and Virgil it is better for them to leave the training camp at this moment. That decision was taken on medical grounds, with of course the interest of the players coming first."
With the Netherlands already securing a spot in next year's Nations League quarter-finals, risking Van Dijk's fitness seemed unnecessary. Liverpool acknowledged its captain's early departure from international duty in a statement on the club's website, confirming the centre-back will be evaluated before their game against Southampton on Sunday.
"Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk will not be involved in the Netherlands' second fixture of this international window on Tuesday night," it read. "The center-back has departed the Dutch camp ahead of their UEFA Nations League tie at Bosnia and Herzegovina, it was announced this morning."
"Van Dijk skippered his country to a 4-0 victory over Hungary in Amsterdam on Saturday evening that confirmed their qualification to the Nations League quarter-finals before the next match. "For both Frenkie and Virgil it is better for them to leave the training camp at this moment.
"He will return to the AXA Training Centre this week for assessment ahead of the Reds' campaign resuming with a trip to Southampton on Sunday."
Van Dijk has been a stalwart for Liverpool this season, clocking up 15 appearances and playing every minute of their Premier League and Champions League matches. However, it's uncertain if he'll be fit enough to continue this streak against his old club at St. Mary's. The Dutchman isn't the only concern for the Reds, as Trent Alexander-Arnold is also nursing an injury after limping off with a hamstring issue during Liverpool's 2-0 triumph over Aston Villa.
Harvey Elliott is back in training with the Under-21s following a two-month absence due to a fractured foot, while both Federico Chiesa and Alisson Becker are expected to return post the November international break. Diogo Jota, however, isn't anticipated to make his injury comeback until December.
Arne Slot will provide an injury update on Van Dijk and the rest of Liverpool's injured players later this week at the AXA Training Centre, ahead of the Reds' journey to Southampton.
