People always use Indian Railways for long and comfortable journeys in the country. Most people like it because it is affordable. But still many people travel in trains without tickets. Railways also keeps issuing awareness messages from time to time for such people. Traveling by train without a ticket is not only wrong, but it is also a criminal offense punishable by fine, imprisonment or both. Frequent intensive ticket checking to curb ticketless/irregular passengers in Mumbai Suburban Local Trains, Mail/Express as well as Passenger Trains and Holiday Special Trains to ensure comfortable travel and better services for all legitimate passengers on Western Railway. The campaign is being run.
Multiple ticket verification drives were conducted from April, 2023 to March, 2024 by a highly experienced ticket verification team under the supervision of senior commercial officials of Western Railway, resulting in revenue of Rs 173.89 crore, of which Rs 46.90 crore was Rs. Crores of rupees were also received from Mumbai suburban section.
According to a press release issued by the Public Relations Department of Western Railway, an amount of Rs 16.77 crore was recovered from 2.75 lakh ticketless/irregular passengers during March, 2024, including cases of unbooked baggage. Also, Western Railways received a fine of Rs 4.80 crore after detecting more than 01 lakh cases on the Mumbai suburban section in the month of March.
To prevent unauthorized travel in AC local trains, surprise ticket checking drives are conducted regularly. As a result of these drives, around 60,000 unauthorized travelers have been fined and Rs 200 lakh collected as fine between April 2023 and March 2024, which is 25% more than the same period last year.
