Bad news for Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal? How Elon Musk’s will allow calling without SIM and network
GH News November 19, 2024 01:06 PM
Elon Musks Starlink satellite internet service is set to launch in India soon raising concerns for major telecom operators like Sunil Mittal’s Airtel and Mukesh Ambani’s Jio. This innovative service promises internet connectivity without the need for a SIM card or mobile network leveraging satellite communication technology.
Elon Musk Starlink’s Megaplan
Elon Musk led Starlink is gearing up to bring its satellite internet service to India with preparations already underway. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is expected to allocate spectrum for satellite communication soon with plans to finalize the process by December 15.
Elon Musks company had applied in October 2022 to launch its services in India. Besides Starlink other major players like Jio Airtel Amazon and Vi are also in the race to roll out their own satellite internet services.
Currently Starlinks satellite internet service is live in several countries around the world offering high-speed internet and calling capabilities without relying on traditional mobile networks or SIM cards. This service stands out from its competitors by providing enhanced internet connectivity making it a game-changer in the industry.
How Call Without Sim Card & Mobile Network Possible?
Most traditional satellite internet services rely on a single geostationary satellite positioned at an altitude of 35786 kilometers above the Earths surface. This high altitude results in significant latency making it challenging for users to enjoy seamless streaming online gaming and video calling due to connectivity delays.
In contrast Starlink uses a network of over 40000 small satellites positioned much closer to Earth at just 550 kilometers above the surface. These satellites operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) providing low-latency internet connections. This proximity significantly reduces lag enabling users to access high-speed internet without disruptions. Elon Musk’s company has deployed nearly 42000 satellites each roughly the size of a tablet to deliver improved network coverage and connectivity.
However Starlink isnt alone in the LEO satellite space. Other services like Airtel OneWeb BSNL-Viasat and Amazon Kuiper are also leveraging LEO satellites to offer internet services.
How Users Can Access Starlinks Internet
Instead of relying on a single large satellite Starlink uses thousands of smaller satellites. To use Starlink’s service users need to install a satellite antenna that captures signals from these satellites to provide internet access. Reports suggest that Starlink users can enjoy internet speeds of up to 150 Mbps allowing for a smooth online experience without interruptions. Moreover users can make calls without needing a mobile network or SIM card due to Starlink’s satellite communication.
Competition To Airtel and Jio
The launch of Starlink in India has heightened tensions among local telecom giants like Airtel and Jio. These companies have been the dominant players in Indias telecom sector but Starlinks innovative technology could disrupt their market share. The ability to offer internet and calling services without traditional networks or SIM cards poses a significant challenge to the existing telecom infrastructure.
The competition in the satellite internet market is heating up with major players like Jio Airtel Amazon and Vi also planning to launch their own satellite internet services. The focus is on providing faster more reliable internet connectivity especially in remote areas where traditional networks struggle to reach.
