After tests showed a grade two rupture in his left hamstring, Australia’s experienced all-rounder Glenn Maxwell suffered a serious setback that may have prevented him from starting the Big Bash League (BBL).
Maxwell was hurt while fielding in Monday’s third Twenty20 match against Pakistan in Hobart. During Monday’s third Twenty20 international between Australia and Pakistan, he was seen pulling at his hamstring and limping out of Bellerive Oval.
Maxwell’s attempt to be called up for a Test recall in front of Australia’s two-match series in Sri Lanka in February 2025 is also hampered by the injury. In 2017, he played his last Test match. Furthermore, he was going to utilize a Sheffield Shield game to get ready for the BBL season, but he will probably miss it now.
The 36-year-old’s injury will keep him out of action for at least four weeks, which is a critical amount of time before the BBL and the next international calendar, Cricket Victoria revealed to Australian Newswire, news.com.au, on Wednesday.
The Melbourne Stars will play the Perth Scorchers on December 15 to kick off the Big Bash League season. Maxwell is in a race against time to be well in time for the start of the competition.
In fewer than ten days, the batting all-rounder was also preparing for a Prime Minister XI squad to play India in Canberra.
Earlier this year, Maxwell had been upbeat about his comeback to Test cricket. In August, he said, “They’ve been fairly open to selecting outside the box for players who do well in those conditions.” He has previously said, “It’s a different beast – you have to have a really solid game plan against spin and a really good idea of how to tackle them in those conditions.”
