Islamabad locked down ahead of protests seeking release of Pakistan’s former PM Imran Khan

Pakistan’s capital was put under a security lockdown on November 24, ahead of protests by supporters of jailed former PM Imran Khan calling for his release. Highways leading to Islamabad through which supporters of Khan, are expected to approach the city and gather near the parliament, have been blocked. Moreover, mobile phone services have been suspended and large contingents of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in riot gear. Taking to X, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) condemned the act and termed the Pakistan Government Fascist. Adding to the tension, the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) has warned of a potential terrorist attack targeting PTI protest in Islamabad. As authorities prepare for possible disturbances, both the government forces and PTI supporters anticipate significant developments throughout the day. Notably, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 14 years in jail in a case related to illegal sale of state gifts
