Google has announced a massive layoff! However, 2024 has been active with the news of several job cuts throughout the year, the end seems to witness Google laying off several jobs at the management level. As per a report by Business Insider, Sundar Pichai has announced that the tech giant will layoff around 10 percent of its employees from the managerial level.
The report further suggested that the decision has been made to make the company more efficient while reducing several managers, directors and even vice presidents. Some of these roles are said to be moved to other departments too.
But this isn’t exactly new. Over the past two years, there have been several reports of Google laying off employees across various departments. Back in September 2022, Pichai talked about making the company “20 percent more efficient,” and by early 2023, Google let go of about 12,000 employees—one of the largest layoffs in its history.
However, it must be noted that Google isn’t alone who is focusing on laying off employees in the tech world. Several other giants such as Amazon have also reduced their management level employees to be more efficient.
Google is betting big on artificial intelligence to stay ahead. It’s adding AI features to its search engine and other core products while launching cool innovations like AI-powered video tools and advanced Gemini AI models.
It’s not just about cutting jobs. Pichai also talked about updating what “Googleyness” means—a core value that defines the company’s culture. He said it’s time to rethink those values to fit today’s fast-moving tech world.
These changes show how serious Google is about staying competitive. By cutting management layers, investing in AI, and rethinking its culture, the company hopes to keep leading the tech industry while adapting to new challenges.
