In December 2024, Google introduced a new charging technology for Pixel series phones in Pixel Drop software. This is bypass charging, which powers the smartphone directly from the power adapter. When a phone with bypass charging is charged, instead of going to the battery, electricity goes directly from the power adapter and the phone gets charged.
Due to bypass charging, the smartphone does not draw power from the battery, but draws power directly from the power adapter. This feature has two benefits - it prevents the battery from getting hot, and helps in keeping the phone cool even in environments like playing games.
Usually when you use a smartphone while charging it, the power first goes to the battery. Then it is pulled by different components like processor and display. In bypass charging mode, it is like using a desktop PC instead of a laptop, where the required power is drawn directly from the power adapter.
Bypass charging works differently in phones of different companies. The bypass charging feature will work only after the Pixel smartphone is charged up to 80 percent. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra does not have such a restriction, but it can only be turned on while playing video games. The bypass charging feature does not eliminate the need for battery in the phone. For the time being the need for battery will remain.
