The Modi government has introduced a significant update regarding toll taxes under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The new rule offers certain exemptions, which include:

  1. Exemption from Toll Tax:

    • Drivers of private vehicles equipped with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) will not have to pay toll tax.
    • Additionally, those driving on highways or expressways will be exempt from paying toll taxes for trips up to 20 km daily.
  2. Conditions for Exemption:

    • The exemption applies only to vehicles with GNSS systems. For trips exceeding 20 km, toll charges will be based on the distance traveled.

GNSS and FASTag System Integration

  • The GNSS-based toll system will work alongside FASTag.
  • This new system is being piloted in select areas like:
    • Bengaluru-Mysore section (National Highway 275)
    • Panipat-Hisar section (National Highway 709)
  • The government aims to expand this system based on the pilot report.

How Does the GNSS System Work?

  • GPS-Based Tolling: GNSS will calculate tolls using GPS satellites. Vehicles with an On-Board Unit (OBU) will automatically calculate tolls based on their movement.
  • Automatic Toll Deduction: Once the toll is calculated, it will be automatically deducted from the driver’s account, and the driver will be notified via SMS.
  • For distances greater than 20 km, tolls will be charged based on the actual distance traveled.

How to Use the GNSS System?

  • For Commercial Vehicles: Owners must install an OBU device in their vehicles to enable the GNSS system to track and calculate tolls based on the journey.
  • Future Integration for Private Vehicles: The system, currently available for commercial vehicles, will soon include private vehicles as well.

Differences Between GNSS and FASTag

  • While FASTag uses RFID tags for toll collection at toll plazas, GNSS is a more advanced, satellite-based system that automatically calculates tolls without requiring vehicles to stop at toll booths. This system aims to provide faster and more efficient tolling.

The GNSS system is expected to reduce congestion at toll plazas and make toll collection more seamless across India.
