BBC One's beloved sitcom Gavin and Stacey made a triumphant return, throwing fans into a frenzy with hints of wedding bells. Tensions were high in Barry as the beloved characters geared up for a wedding, but whose?

James Corden's Smithy seemed to be gearing up for the stag party to end all stag parties. Yet, the twist hit like a tonne of bricks; it wasn't his wedding with Nessa (played by Ruth Jones) that everyone was eagerly anticipating.

Instead, we find Smithy entangled with Sonia (Laura Aikman), causing an uproar among viewers.

Nessa, on the other hand, provided comic relief offering tuktuk rides seemingly unperturbed by Smithy's amorous adventures. Fans were clinging to hope that Nessa might crash the wedding, fervently voicing their disbelief on the social platform X, formerly known as Twitter, reports .

Social media was ablaze with reactions. @chlxhkpins exploded: "That was f*****g evil to do #GavinAndStacey".

@k4tzlvr raged: "I'm so f****** mad #GavinAndStacey".

Meanwhile, @lewisa95 voiced the collective dream of a dramatic twist saying: "If Nessa doesn't turn up and end up marrying Smithy instead we riot #GavinAndStacey". And in stark contrast, @TheDutchxes declared, "Na I'm turning it off already #GavinAndStacey."

Humour was not amiss elsewhere in the episode, with Nessa brandishing both her vape and cigarette, delivering precisely what fans have come to expect. The interaction between Nessa and Smithy hinted at unresolved feelings when Smithy told her, "There will be a place for you, you know, if your plans change," she retorted, "I ain't got no plans, Smithy. We both knows that."

Nessa confided in Stacey (Joanna Page) about the proposal, revealing that she had been interrupted by Gavin (Matthew Horne) and Smithy had left her hanging without an answer.

When Smithy finally mustered up the courage to discuss the proposal with Nessa, she confessed that she regretted the entire ordeal and was ready to move on.

However, things turned out alright in the end as during the wedding, Gavin plucked up the courage to tell Smithy he was making a mistake.

Smithy finally realised he wanted to be with Nessa and chased after her as she was about to leave Barry for good. After proposing to her, the show's final moments were of Nessa and Smithy's highly-anticipated wedding.

The grand finale will be succeeded by a documentary titled 'Gavin and Stacey: A Fond Farewell' on January 1, which narrates the journey of the much-loved sitcom over the past 17 years.

The documentary offers unparalleled access to creators James Corden and Ruth Jones, as well as the cast and crew, as they film their final episodes together.

Celebrity fans will also weigh in on the show's impact on British society and why they believe 'Gavin and Stacey' is the best show on TV.
