Today the name Ambani is synonymous with wealth grandeur and influence. However their meteoric rise began humbly rooted in a modest one-room chawl in Mumbai’s Kabootar Khana where even basic amenities like a private toilet were a luxury shared among hundreds.
Story begins with Dhirubhai Ambani who was born in Chorwad Gujarat. Dhirubhai Ambanis early life was marked by financial challenges. As the son of a schoolteacher he grew up in humble circumstances but displayed an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. Instead of attending school regularly young Dhirubhai observed street vendors constantly seeking ways to earn money. From selling fried snacks to pilgrims to exploring small ventures he sharpened his business acumen.
Dhirubhai Ambani Returns To India
After working as a petrol attendant in Aden Yemen he returned to India in 1959 with a few thousand rupees a modest sum but enough for a man with boundless dreams.
Anil Ambani Dhirubhais son reflected on this chapter during an interview with Simi Garewal “In 1959 my father had just returned from Aden. He had made a few thousand which would be equal to a few lakhs today. We were a family of six including my grandmother living in a chawl in a backward area of Bombay called Kabootar Khana. It was a bustling neighborhood known as Jai Hind Estate.”
Ambani Brothers Life In Mumbai Chawl
The Ambani family’s early years in Mumbai were marked by simplicity and shared struggles. Living on the fourth floor of a chawl the family of seven resided in a one-room home with a small kitchen. There were no attached toilets; instead they shared a common facility with dozens of other families.
Anil Ambani recalled their modest lifestyle during the same interview and said “We used to live on the fourth floor in a one-bedroom hall with a kitchen. There were no attached toilets just a common one for maybe a hundred people on the same floor. It was in that environment that we grew up.”
Even clothing was a shared commodity between the brothers. Anil elaborated “We didn’t have many clothes. We used to share and alternate outfits. One day my brother would wear a brown trouser and I’d wear black. Then we’d swap the next day.”
Building Reliance Empire
Dhirubhai Ambani’s vision transformed Reliance Industries into a powerhouse that redefined India’s corporate landscape. His legacy was carried forward by his sons Mukesh and Anil Ambani. Mukesh took Reliance to unprecedented heights expanding into global markets and pioneering India’s energy telecom and retail sectors.
Anil on the other hand charted his own path in infrastructure entertainment and power. Despite achieving significant success his empire faced severe financial setbacks marking one of the most dramatic corporate downfalls in Indian history. Yet true to his father’s teachings Anil continues to rebuild with resilience and determination.
