Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 at AIIMS hospital in Delhi. He had been struggling with health issues related to old age for a long time. Interestingly while Manmohan Singh was primarily known for his political achievements he also had a connection to the film industry indirectly. A Bollywood biopic based on his life was released five years ago and it stirred significant controversy. Let’s take a look at the film and the issues surrounding it. In 2019 a movie titled The Accidental Prime Minister was released based on the real-life story of Manmohan Singh. The film depicted Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister and sparked significant backlash from the Congress party. The controversy stemmed from the portrayal of Singh as a remote-controlled Prime Minister a narrative often used by political opponents in their criticisms. Congress leaders claimed the film misrepresented Singh leading to heated debates and strong objections from the party. In The Accidental Prime Minister veteran actor Anupam Kher took on the role of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. His portrayal complete with Singhs signature expressions appearance and manner of speaking was so convincing that many felt he had truly brought the statesman to life on screen. Kher’s performance garnered widespread praise for his exceptional acting skills. The movie also featured Suzanne Bernert as Sonia Gandhi Arjun Mathur as Rahul Gandhi and Ahana Kumra as Priyanka Gandhi delivering notable performances in their respective roles. Directed by Vijay Gutte the film was produced by Sunil Bohra and Dhawan. The Accidental Prime Minister was a hit The budget of the film was Rs 18 crores and it collected Rs 31 crores worldwide. According to the figures the movie was a hit despite the controversy surrounding it. Now let’s understand the reason behind the uproar. The Accidental Prime Ministers controversy The controversy arose from how the film portrayed events during the UPA governments rule. In the movie Manmohan Singh was shown as being heavily influenced by Sonia Gandhi which angered the Congress party. It depicted Singh as a victim of the partys dynastic politics highlighting how he was often sidelined to create space for Sonia Gandhis son Rahul Gandhi. This portrayal became a major point of criticism and sparked a heated debate.
