End Of An Era: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Dies At 92

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died on Thursday at AIIMS Delhi. He was 92. In a statement, AIIMS Hospital said, "With profound grief, we inform the demise of former prime minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26th December 2024. Resuscitative measures were started immediatedly at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8.06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9.51 PM." .

PM Narendra Modi extended his condolences, saying, "India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives. Home Minister Amit Shah wrote: "The news of the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is extremely sad. From being the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India to the Finance Minister of the country and as the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh played an important role in the governance of the country. I express my condolences to his family and supporters in this hour of grief. May Waheguru grant peace to his soul and give strength to his family to bear this grief." Priyanka Gandhi wrote, "Few people in politics inspire the kind of respect that Sardar Manmohan Singh ji did. His honesty will always be an inspiration for us and he will forever stand tall among those who truly love this country as someone who remained steadfast in his commitment to serve the nation despite being subjected to unfair and deeply personal attacks by his opponents. He was genuinely egalitarian, wise, strong willed and courageous until the end. A uniquely dignified and gentle man in the rough world of politics." Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the demise of India’s former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. He played a key role in rebuilding India’s economy during difficult times. He was widely respected for his service and intellect. His contribution to India’s progress will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti!" Architect Of India's Economic ReformsManmohan Singh served as India's 14th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, overseeing a period of significant economic progress. His leadership saw the introduction of key reforms such as the Right to Information Act and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. It also saw the landmark Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal.His tenure was, however, marred by criticism over corruption scandals and accusations of indecisiveness in leadership.Singh began his political career in 1991 as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, spearheading economic reforms that opened up India’s economy, paving the way for rapid growth and globalisation.Before that, he held prominent roles such as Chief Economic Advisor, RBI Governor, and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission (now Niti Aayog).
