Chennai: A 37-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday allegedly for raping a second-year engineering student studying in Chennai's Anna University. The incident took place on the campus of the university, which is the high-security Raj Bhavan and IIT Madras. Upon investigation, the police found out that the accused was arrested in 2011 on account of a similar case. Currently, he is facing 15 cases relating to theft and others.The accused, identified as Gnanasekaran, runs an eatery near the college campus. Around 8 pm on December 23, the accused saw the girl with her male friend. He recorded the intimacy between the woman and her friend, and approached them with the footage. He blackmailed them to use the same against them. He forced the man to go away and raped the girl, she alleged, reported . Woman Decided to Call The Police On Tuesday, the survivor spoke with her friend who is doing his third year in the university, and then contacted the police control room by dialling 100. The woman alleged sexual abuse by the intruder, and told the police that she would go to the police station in the evening to file a formal complaint since she had an examination in the morning.Noting the gravity of the situation, the police reached the university and met the authorities there. A led by Kotturpuram assistant commissioner of police Bharathirajan narrowed down to the accused after searching CCTV cameras installed in the area. They arrested the accused, added the media report.During the incident, the police found out that the accused was involved in multiple crimes in different parts of the city. Meanwhile, a college official identified the accused, saying that the latter was arrested in 2011. Launching an investigation, the police picked up semen samples from the spot, and are searching for the accused’s mobile phone, considering that the device might have evidence of the other crimes too. The university officials have said that they would install more CCTV cameras on the premises, and would engage ex-servicemen for patrolling, surveillance and security on the campus. Meanwhile, police have also issued a press release saying a joint security review will be conducted by police and university officials to ensure safety of students and faculty members.
