Scammers are exploiting technology to trap unsuspecting individuals in fraudulent schemes. The latest tactic involves fake RBI voicemail scamswhere fraudsters impersonate the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to extract sensitive information and steal money from victims’ bank accounts. The government has stepped up its efforts to raise awareness, urging citizens to remain vigilant. Here’s everything you need to know to stay safe.
In this scam, victims receive calls from unknown numbers with a pre-recorded voicemail. The message typically states:
“Namaste, this is Bhartiya Reserve Bank. Your credit card has been involved in fraudulent activity. All bank accounts in your name will be blocked in the next two hours. For more information, please press 9.”
In a state of panic, many victims press “9,” unknowingly granting scammers access to their sensitive information, including banking details.
The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit recently issued a warning through an X postcautioning people about this scam. The post read:
“Have you received a voicemail, allegedly from the Reserve Bank of India, claiming that your bank account will be blocked due to fraudulent credit card activity? #PIBFactCheck Beware! This is a scam.”
The message aims to spread awareness and prevent individuals from falling prey to such fraudulent schemes.
