India were defeated in the fourth Test of the five-match series for the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Yashasvi Jaiswal was without a doubt the best batter for India as they looked well set on their way to draw the game at least. However, he got out after scoring 84 runs, in the most controversial way possible. Controversy erupted when he was given out by the third umpire even though the snick-o-meter did not pick up an edge. Now, Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out at the third umpire, calling the decision as a call due to optical illusion. When the ball travelled to the wicketkeeper after Yashasvi Jaiswal attempted to pull a ball from Pat Cummins, the umpires gave not out. After Australia appealed for the DRS, the snick-o-meter did not show an edge, but it looked like the ball changed its trajectory after hitting the glove. The third umpire judged it as out. While on commentary for Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar slammed the umpire for not depending on technology to make the decision. He even said that the ball changing its trajectory is nothing but an optical illusion.

“If you are using technology, then use technology only. Whatever I am seeing, I always say that this is an optical illusion. This is an optical illusion. There is snicko, what does snicko say? Snicko is a straight line. So it is absolutely not out," Gavaskar said.“According to me, this is not out. If anything could be seen from snicko, then it was different. This is a wrong decision. Absolutely wrong decision. Otherwise, don't use technology. If you are going to go with optical illusion, then don't use technology at all. It's simple. It's very simple," he added.India were all out for 155 runs in the fourth innings, as they lost the Test match by 184 runs, thus dashing their hopes of reaching the final of the WTC.
