Ruben Amorim owes Man Utd fans a proper explanation over brutal Marcus Rashford treatment
Football December 29, 2024 02:39 PM

The idea that Ruben Amorim’s position as manager should be under any sort of threat is ridiculous. The Ruben Interim tag is funny but that is about all.

Results are not great, United having stumbled to four defeats in their last five Premier League games. And let’s face it, the one victory in that run was an early Christmas present from a woefully generous

But Amorim has inherited a squad that is not fit for elite purpose and as he carries out his own inventory of what is currently available to him, matters are unlikely to improve any time soon. The malaise that has long been present in United’s playing staff is so deep that it would be hard to argue against the suggestion that offers for ANY player should be listened to when the season comes to an end.

And if anyone, in the summer or even in the impending winter window, offers decent money for Marcus Rashford, it will be snap-their-hands-off time. There is a huge irony that the latest Sir Jim Ratcliffe-led, cost-cutting wheeze is, apparently, to stop a £40,000 donation to an ex-players charity, yet he has a current player earning £375,000 a week for doing nothing. Doing nothing while as fit as a fiddle.

There are probably few United fans who would not side with Amorim when making the sort of decision that has seen Rashford frozen out of the first team squad. So many United supporters have said Rashford’s attitude has been rotten, so they can hardly complain when a new manager takes action.

Is Marcus Rashford's Manchester United career over?

But what is lacking from Amorim is a spot of transparency. What is Rashford doing so badly that it means he is not even considered for a place on the bench?

What are the ‘crimes’ that are keeping him out of a squad that is getting thumped at home by Bournemouth and losing at Wolves? This is a player who remains United’s joint-top Premier League scorer this season, albeit with a measly four goals.

This is a player who has scored three times for Amorim. In an interview that surely marked his lifelong association with club, Rashford has said he is ready for a ‘new challenge’.

But it is hard to see him going anywhere in January and while he remains on the books - at an exorbitant cost to the club - he remains available for selection. And the bottom line is that a fully motivated, fully committed Rashford gets into a first-choice United team.

We are guessing Amorim believes Rashford is neither fully motivated or committed … but we are only guessing. As mediocre as his form has been since signing that ludicrous, overly lucrative deal back in the summer of 2023, Rashford should still represent a useful option for a manager who is struggling to win football matches.

If Rashford cannot get back into a squad that, for Monday night’s game against Newcastle United, will be minus Bruno Fernandes, then he really is doing something heinous behind the scenes. And considering what United fans are having to watch, they deserve an explanation.
