A title fans claim is 'Michael Bay's best film' since action classics from the 1990s is on TV tonight.
The director is known for hits such as The Rock, Bad Boys and five Transformers movies but his most recent feature film is being praised as one of his best since early in the filmmaker's career. Good news for film fans is that the 2022 release Ambulance will be shown on television for free.
It will be aired on Film4 at 9pm, Sunday December 29. Those unable to settle down at that time can also stream it at their leisure, providing they have a subscription to Amazon Prime. The film was an English-language of a Danish production of the same name released back in 2005.
The story follows decorated veteran Will Sharp (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II from Candyman and The Matrix Resurrections), who ends up desperate for money to pay for his wife’s medical treatment and asks for help from his adoptive brother Danny (played by Jake Gyllenhaal). Danny offers him a spot on a job which would be the biggest bank heist in Los Angeles history with a potential $32 million haul.
Worried his wife won't survive, Will agrees but when their getaway goes spectacularly wrong, the duo hijack an ambulance with a severely injured cop and EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza González, who appeared in Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw) onboard. They find themselves involved in a high-speed pursuit where the brothers must evade authorities chasing them across the city and find a way they could possibly get away with it all.
Critical reception to the film was mixed although it still received praise with one reviewer stating: "Michael Bay at his best & even at his worst…. But still it’s a damn good time at the movies. Jake Gyllenhaal is unhinged, Yahya Abdul brings the emotional core with Eiza Gonzalez. I was on edge the entire time & I can’t wait to see it again."
Another claimed that Bay was back to his best as they wrote: "One of Michael Bay’s better action thrillers in years! Yahya & Gyllenhaal sell me on their brotherly relationship & every reaction decision they make from the start. It’s engaging, entertaining & action packed with a finish line which works in Bay’s favour."
Ambulance being one of the director's better projects is a sentiment echoed by fans as one simply said: "This was Michael Bay best movie since action classic The Rock."
Another added: "Nobody quite does unbridled action like Michael Bay and boy have we missed the master director since his chaotic but immensely watchable 6 Underground! The Bay-ness is at an all-time high in his latest venture, Ambulance where Jake Gyllenhaal and crew are let loose on the streets of Los Angeles with cars, guns and helicopters thrown around like kitty litter to devastating, yet immersive and enjoyable effect."
A third declared it is 'highly recommended' as they said: "The action is non stop and I mean non stop, the story is insane but the cast are so much more than the film deserves and this is what makes it such a good fun demented insane action flick."
Ambulance is on Film4 at 9pm Sunday December 29 and streaming on Amazon Prime.
