Sydney [Australia], January 1: Australia’s batsman-wicketkeeper Alex Carey discussed the bumping incident between Virat Kohli and Sam Konstas on the first day of the Melbourne Test on Wednesday, saying the young Australian didn’t take it personally.

India’s hopes of making it to the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord’s early next year were dashed after Australia defeated them by an exciting 184 runs in the Melbourne Test, giving them a 2-1 series lead. Australia is now leading India 2-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is still in play.

Carey claimed to have seen a picture of Konstas and Kohli shaking hands after the conclusion of the Melbourne Test at the pre-game news conference. The batsman-wicketkeeper went on to say that he is unsure of exactly what transpired between the two players.

“I believe I saw a picture of them with trembling hands and a little pat on the back. It’s Test Cricket, I see. Yes, I’m not quite certain. However, Sam didn’t take it personally,” Carey said.

To begin for Australia against a proven Indian speed attack in front of a sell-out crowd, 19-year-old Konstas was summoned into the team in place of Nathan McSweeney.

During his time on the crease, Konstas provided amusement and gained popularity among Australian supporters. In the first inning of the Melbourne Test, he grabbed headlines with a spectacular ramp shot off Bumrah, demonstrating his intention to remain aggressive even against the new red ball.

In Australia, Konstas’ much awaited debut proved to be among the most entertaining in a long time. Virat got into a violent argument with the 19-year-old after running into him and making direct shoulder-to-shoulder contact, in addition to the fact that he scored 34 of his 60 runs against Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah and made headlines by playing with him.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) penalized the 36-year-old 20% of his match pay and gave him one penalty point for the confrontation.

At the beginning of Day 05 of the Melbourne Test, Australia set a goal of 340 runs for India. Despite having the whole day, the guests were unable to make it matter. In the 80th over, India was swept out at 155 thanks to fiery spells from the Australian bowling attack.

The last Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) match between Australia and India will begin on January 3 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
