Vera is reaching its conclusion, but what triggered its ending and could fans expect a spin-off?
Season 14 of Vera premieres tonight, New Year's Day, Wednesday, January 1, with the first of two episodes hitting screens, introducing another mind-bending case.
Longstanding fans were met with the unfortunate news earlier this year that this latest instalment will mark the final chapter of the beloved detective drama, drawing the curtains on the show after 14 years.
Why is Vera ending?is ending Vera primarily because leading lady Brenda Blethyn, who has embodied the titular character since its inception, has opted to leave the series.
While her affection for the role is no secret, the 78 year old actress has revealed that the demanding filming schedule has meant extended periods away from her husband, Michael Mayhew, and their pet dog Jack.
Though Vera is set against the backdrop of Newcastle, Blethyn and her partner reside in Kent, compelling her to spend several months in the north each year due to the show.
Reflecting on her decision to step away, Blethyn shared: "It was a lovely summer back in 2023 and I came to realise I hadn't had a summer with my husband for 14 years.
"Naturally I missed my family. And my dog Jack, although he was with me in the North East.
"But I didn't see him much because I was working all day. I love my Vera family, but I love my other family too."
Could a Vera spin-off be on the horizon? As Vera nears its conclusion, fans are left wondering if a spin-off could be on the horizon to fill the void.
While there's been no official word on a new series within the of Vera, Brenda Blethyn, who plays the iconic detective, isn't opposed to the concept.
She quipped: "I wish there could have been an episode where I stayed at home in Kent: 'Vera Goes South.'
"But, of course, the series is dyed in the wool Northumberland and the North East and I understand that's where it has to be."
The upcoming 14th season of Vera will feature two episodes. The premiere, titled Inside, follows the probe into a young man found dead by the River Tyne.
The second instalment, named The Dark Wives, investigates both a student's murder and a teenager's vanishing act.
This particular case unfolds near the Three Dark Wives, "a set of legendary stones in the Northumberland countryside that Vera remembers from her childhood".,
Vera season 14 premieres on New Year's Day, Wednesday, January 1, at 8pm on ITV and ITVX.
