Kerala: Nineteen years after the brutal murder of a young mother and her newborn twin daughters in Achal, Kollam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two accused who had been absconding since the crime. The murder, which took place on 10th February 2006, was initially registered at Anchal Police Station before the investigation was transferred to the CBI by the Kerala High Court in 2010.The CBI's investigation revealed shocking new details about the case. Sources stated that Divil Kumar, one of the accused, was the father of the twins and had been in a relationship with the victim, Ranjini. Ranjini had previously approached the Kerala Women's Commission (KWC) for help, and KWC had issued a notice to Divil Kumar. It was also revealed that in 2006, both accused, Divil Kumar and Rajesh, were serving in the Indian Army.Rajesh, who introduced himself to Ranjini at a government hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, convinced her that he could facilitate a legal marriage between her and Divil Kumar. However, on 10th February 2006, Ranjini and her two twins were brutally killed in their rented house. The CBI had offered a reward of Rs 2 lakh for information leading to the arrest of the absconding accused.Long Pursuit Ends with Arrest in Puducherry The two accused, Divil Kumar and Rajesh, evaded capture for years, and there were fears that they may have fled abroad. However, Kerala Police, using Artificial Intelligence to track down their identities, compared photos on social media. One of the photos showed Divil Kumar attending a wedding, which led investigators to Puducherry. Upon further investigation, the two men had assumed new identities—Divil Kumar became Vishnu, and Rajesh took the name Praveen Kumar. Both had settled in Puducherry, where they married, purchased property, and lived for years under false identities.Accused Remanded to Judicial Custody On 3rd January 2025, the CBI arrested Divil Kumar and Rajesh in Puducherry, and they were brought back to Kerala. On 4th January 2025, the accused were presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Ernakulam and remanded to judicial custody.
