Vinay Hiremath the Indian-origin co-founder of Loom recently shared an introspective note about the uncertainties and challenges he has faced since achieving immense wealth. The entrepreneur sold his video messaging startup to Atlassian in 2023 for $975 million led him into financial independence but also leaving him grappling with his purpose in life.
In a candid blog post titled I Am Rich and I Have No Idea What to Do With My Life Hiremath described how life has felt like a haze over the past year. “After selling my company I find myself in the totally relatable position of never having to work again” he wrote. Despite having infinite freedom Hiremath admitted he feels lost with no driving ambition for wealth or status. “Everything feels like a side quest but not in an inspiring way. I’m not the most optimistic about life” he confessed.
A Painful Breakup
Hiremath also opened up about personal struggles including a difficult breakup with his girlfriend of two years. Calling their relationship one of “unconditional love” he described the split as “extremely painful” but necessary due to his insecurities. In an emotional note to his ex he wrote: “If my ex is reading this thank you for everything. I am sorry I couldn’t be what you needed me to be.”
Career Choices and Walking Away from Millions
After the acquisition Hiremath faced another dilemma: staying with the acquiring company as CTO a role that came with a potential $60 million payout. Ultimately he chose to leave retreating to the solitude of California’s redwoods to recalibrate. “I needed to do something anything to feel alive again” he explained.
Hiremath’s Journey To Find Purpose
Hiremath’s journey to find purpose led him down several paths. Initially he explored the field of robotics meeting with investors and experts in hopes of creating machines with “arms and legs.” However he soon realized this pursuit was more about emulating Elon Musk than genuine passion. “It hurts to even type this out” he admitted.
His search for meaning also took him to the Himalayas where he attempted a climb without any prior experience. The adventure ended abruptly when he fell ill and had to be rappelled down a surreal experience he described as “tripping out of my mind.”
Working With Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy
He also shared his experience of working with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy in DOGE for four weeks. Hiremath’s friends suggested he reach out to figures like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy leading to a brief but intense stint with a political think tank in Washington D.C. Despite working alongside some of the smartest people he’d ever met Hiremath realized the role wasn’t for him and instead booked a one-way ticket to Hawaii.
He’s determined to create a company that builds “real-world things” even if it doesn’t replicate the astronomical success of Loom. Reflecting on his journey Hiremath seems more focused on finding fulfillment than chasing accolades.
