Payal Kapadia the visionary behind All We Imagine As Light lost to Brady Corbet of The Brutalist in the Best Director category at the 82nd Golden Globes. She faced fierce competition from notable filmmakers including Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez) Sean Baker (Anora) Edward Berger (Conclave) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance). Despite these setbacks Payal Kapadia maintained her composure and continued to cheer for other winners with a gracious smile. About All We Imagine As Light The movie tells the poignant story of Prabha a troubled nurse who unexpectedly receives a gift from her estranged husband and Anu her young roommate who seeks intimacy with her boyfriend. A trip to a beach town allows both women to confront their desires and emotions. Premiering at the prestigious 2024 Cannes Film Festival All We Imagine As Light was selected for the competition section marking a historic moment as the first Indian film to feature in this coveted segment in 30 years. The last Indian film in Cannes’ main competition was Shaji N Karuns Swaham in 1994. Payal Kapadia reacts to losing at Golden Globes Award 2025 Though Payal didn’t win an award at the Golden Globes she made history as the first Indian director ever to be nominated for Best Director. Reflecting on her historic nomination Payal said “I’m deeply honoured by this nomination and grateful to the HFPA for this recognition. This is a celebration of everyone who worked so passionately on the film. To everyone in India All We Imagine As Light is still in theatres—please go watch it and support us!” While the 2025 Golden Globes may have been a disappointment for Payal it’s important to note that India has seen its fair share of Golden Globe triumphs. Last year Naatu Naatu the infectious hit from SS Rajamoulis RRR won Best Original Song. However the film lost out to Argentina 1985 in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English category.
