At the box office Allu Arjuns Pushpa 2: The Rule is ruling the box office. Meanwhile Vijay Sethupathis Maharaja is ruling in the China market and is about to enter the Rs 100 crore club. Apart from this films like Dangal RRR Secret Superstar and Andhadhun have also earned crores there. But the performance of these blockbuster films has failed in comparison to the collection of a small budget crime-thriller released 54 years ago. The movie starring Jeetendra and Asha Parekh was a superhit in India but it found even greater success abroad in China when it released there in 1979 becoming the highest-grossing foreign film in China. The film is estimated to have earned over Rs 353 million in Asia mostly in China. Adjusted for inflation it is still one of the highest grossing Indian films of all time. We are talking about Carawan. The movie was released in China 8 years after its original release and sold Rs 8.8 crore worth of tickets making it the highest-grossing foreign film in China at that time. The films popularity was so immense that it was re-released multiple times in China attracting a total audience of 30 crore viewers—the highest for any Indian film in a single country. It surpassed the records of Sholay in India and Awara in the Soviet Union to achieve this milestone. Dangal is widely regarded as the biggest Indian hit overseas owing to its massive $238 million collection from China alone. The film sold 43.1 million tickets in China which is significantly less than Carawan. Similarly SS Rajamoulis RRR made history in the US and Japan with record-breaking earnings grossing around $20 million from these regions combined. However only about 3 million people watched the film in these countries. Meanwhile Pushpa 2: The Rule stands as one of the biggest Indian films in recent years selling 60 million tickets in India and another 10 million overseas within its first month. Yet when compared to Carawan these figures fall short.
