Vidhu Vinod Chopra is undeniably one of Bollywoods most gifted filmmakers. With a remarkable track record his name alone promises a high-quality film experience. Recently praised for his film 12th Fail Chopra’s career is full of intriguing anecdotes. Here’s one that you might not know: The director once gifted the legendary Amitabh Bachchan a luxurious Rolls-Royce Phantom worth ₹4 crore. Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Gesture to Amitabh Bachchan for... In a gesture of appreciation Chopra presented Bachchan with a Rolls-Royce Phantom for sticking with him through the difficult production of Eklavya (2007). Chopra in a candid interview revealed that he had asked Bachchan to cover his own travel and accommodation expenses during the film shoot because he couldn’t afford to provide for all the stars involved. The director explained that if he had paid for Bachchan’s costs he would have been obligated to do the same for Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt which would have put the film well over budget. However recognising Bachchans support Chopra later surprised the actor with the luxury car. In his words it was a gesture of gratitude for staying committed to the project. Chopra also shared a funny moment from that day. When he took his mother along to hand over the car keys to Bachchan she had no idea how much the Rolls-Royce cost. She initially guessed the price to be around ₹11 lakh which made Chopra laugh before he corrected her. But when she learned the car’s actual worth of ₹4 crore she slapped him. I will never forget this incident. I took my mother with me when I was gifting the car to Amitabh. She handed him the keys. She came back sat in my car which was a blue Maruti van. She called Big B Lamboo. I didn’t have a driver at the time so I was driving. She told me Tu Lamboo nu gaadi dedi? I said Haan. She replied Tu khud kyun nahi leta gaadi? I told her I would buy a car; when it was time. She responded saying 11 lakh ki toh hogi. And I laughed because she didn’t know that it was Rs 4.5 crore. I told her the cost and she slapped me calling me bewakoof. I will never forget that because what is money if it can’t give you joy (sic) recalled Vinod. About Eklavya Eklavya: The Royal Guard starring Amitabh Bachchan Saif Ali Khan Sanjay Dutt and Vidya Balan was a unique film that depicted contemporary India with a majestic fort and a royal dynasty without a king. Although it wasn’t a box-office hit it earned critical acclaim and made history by being India’s official entry for the Oscars that year.
