Psychological thrillers are one of the intriguing genres that captivates a wide section of the audience who wants to watch something different. Over the years Malayalam industry has delivered some of the best psychological thrillers worth watching. If you are planning to delve into a spine-chilling session here is one movie that you can watch on OTT. We are talking about Athiran streaming on Disney + Hotstar.
Released in 2019 the Malayalam psychological thriller stars Fahadh Faasil and Sai Pallavi with Atul Kulkarni Renji Panicker Shanthi Krishna and Sudev Nair in pivotal roles and Prakash Raj in a special cameo appearance. Directed by Vivek and bankrolled by Raju Mathew the film has similarities with 2014 Hollywood film Stonehearst Asylum.
The film showcases an isolated hospital in the ranges of Kerala where a psychiatrist unravels the past leads of an autistic patient with special skills. The psychological thriller explores themes of mental illness power dynamics and the human psyche delving in a gripping narrative with unexpected twists.
Athiran marks Viveks directorial debut drawing inspiration from a blend of real-life events. He discussed The story idea came up after I went to a Kalari school in Thrippunithura Kerala where autistic students were performing with the same prowess as the schools other students.
Fahadh Faasil who portrays doctor in the film was last seen in Pushpa 2: The Rule which earned Rs 1000 crore within just 2 weeks. He played the role of antagonist Bhanawar Singh Shekhawat in the film receiving widespread acclaim for his performance in the Pushpa series. Moreover Faasil is set to make his Bollywood debut in an upcoming film directed by Imtiaz Ali featuring Triptii Dimri. Production begins in early 2025.
Meanwhile coming to Sai Pallavi the actress was last seen in the 2022 Tamil film Gargi. She will next appear in Chandoo Mondetis film opposite Naga Chaitanya.
