WhatsApp is a very popular instant messaging platform around the world. If you also use WhatsApp, then there is good news for you. Its payment feature WhatsApp Pay has got approval to start Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services for its entire user base in India.
Let us tell you that the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) recently announced its decision to remove the limit on user onboarding for WhatsApp Pay.
In an official statement, NPCI announced, "The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has removed the UPI user onboarding limit for WhatsApp Pay (third-party app provider) with immediate effect. Now WhatsApp Pay can expand UPI services to its entire user base in India. "
This decision will benefit more than 500 million users of WhatsApp in India. Earlier, only about 100 million WhatsApp users could use this service. When WhatsApp Pay was launched, NPCI imposed strict limits on the number of users to ensure that the platform was able to manage the demand of India's massive digital payment ecosystem while maintaining security and performance standards.
User cap increased to 100 million by November 2022
So initially, only a small portion of UPI users could use this service. NPCI gradually increased the limit while monitoring compliance and operational efficiency. By November 2022, the user cap was increased to 100 million, giving WhatsApp Pay a chance to refine its system and address scalability or security issues before expanding further.
NPCI's decision to remove the limit
When NPCI saw that WhatsApp Pay has met all the operational, security, and compliance standards required for UPI payment services. Then after that, the decision was taken to remove the limit. Even after this decision, WhatsApp Pay will have to continue to follow the existing UPI guidelines for third-party app providers (TPAP).
Its impact on India's UPI ecosystem
With more than 500 million WhatsApp users in the country, this update is set to take India's UPI ecosystem to new heights. WhatsApp Pay can now promote its payment feature in a great way. That is, it can pose a challenge to market leaders like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. At present, a large number of people use these apps for UPI transactions.
