Xander Schauffele has spoken out after the American golfer was booed by fans on his TGL debut.

The inaugural indoor golf competition and finally got underway on Tuesday, with New York Golf Club facing The Bay at SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The likes of Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Schauffele lined up representing New York, with their opponents for The Bay comprising of Shane Lowry, Wyndham Clark and Ludvig Aberg.

The event began in bizarre circumstances when Lowry forgot to grab a tee from his bag for the first shot of the match, prompting laughter amongst his peers.

Players spoke of their joy at getting to grips with the tech-infused concept, which is designed to enjoy quicker, more quirky games of golf than the tradtional version seen on the PGA Tour or LIV Golf.

But not everyone had the greatest experience on their debut, with Schauffele forced to endure the humiliating boos from the crowd after botching a chip shot.

And the 31-year-old admitted he couldn't blame the fans for wanting to jeer his efforts: "I probably would have booed me too," he said.

The 15-hole match lasted just under two hours, which is how TGL envisioned it would work, as The Bay took home a crushing 9-2 victory over New York with five holes to spare.

It was fitting that Lowry would go on to record the clinching point after his earlier blunder, as the Irishman got the better of Rickie Fowler in the singles at the 10th hole.

Woods spoke of his delight at bringing his idea to life along with McIlroy and the 15-time major winner was happy to take his sport into another dimension.

"This was just a dream conjured up," Woods said on the ESPN broadcast.

"Rory and I were talking about it; it's hard to believe that dream came into reality and we were able to take golf into another stratosphere, really."

He added: "It's not traditional golf, yes. But it is golf. And that's the main thing."

Woods is expected to make his first appearance for the Jupiter Links team on January 14, while McIlroy may be forced to wait until January 27 when Boston Common are pitted against Jupiter Links.

The regular season will continue until March 4, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs.

They will then compete in a best-of-three championship series, which takes place just two weeks before the Masters.
