Malappuram: At least 24 people were injured after an elephant got agitated during a religious festival in Kerala's Malappuram district on the intervening night of January 7 and 8. The elephant, named Pakkathu Sreekuttan, reportedly lost control when the annual offering at BP Angadi Mosque in Tirur was underway. The animal lifted a man and swung him in the air.
The incident occurred at 12:30 am at the night. Panic gripped the attendees. The incident was recorded on camera and soon the video went viral. Revelers fled from the spot as the elephant starting to get agitated.

According to a report by NDTV, hundred of people gathered at the Puthiyangadi festival at Tirur. In the video which went viral, five elephants were decorated with with golden plates at the festival. People started to click pictures. suddenly one of the elephants became agitated and charged towards the crowd.
The elephant lifted the man and flung him away. He reportedly sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital. The man is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital at Kotakkal.
Maximum of the injuries are due to a stampede-like situation that was created due to the panic.The elephant was reportedly brought under control after two hours.
